Founded in December 2018 in Beijing, SourceEngine (Beijing SourceEngine Technology LLC.) aspires to become China’s leading provider of customized open-source intelligence solutions, empowering businesses and individuals to make informed decisions and stay competitive.
Founding story
SourceEngine was founded by Xin Feng, a former award-winning journalist with a deep background in investigative and explanatory reporting on China’s public affairs and business sectors.
During her seven years in in-depth reporting, Xin frequently encountered challenges in inadequate open sources, online tools and public information. She realized that the lack of reliable information could hinder citizens’ ability to access facts. A society lacking truth would struggle to make informed decisions and progress.
Determined to address this issue, Xin left frontline reporting in late 2017 to become a John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University, where she was the only journalist from Asia to receive the honor that year. Immersing herself in Silicon Valley, she began to conceptualize and develop what would eventually become SourceEngine.
Returning to Beijing in late 2018, Xin founded SourceEngine with the initial goal of solving information-gathering challenges for journalists in China. However, after numerous business and technological iterations, Xin and her team realized that the need for reliable information extended far beyond the journalism community. The true challenge was to translate the journalistic mindset and methodology of pursuing truth into technology and products that could benefit a broader range of users. As a result, SourceEngine expanded its original mission from empowering journalists to supporting a wider array of industries.
